1. 5193 SHAPWICK CHURCH STREET Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew ST 93 01 7/1 18.3.55 I GV 2. C12 origin, altered and enlarged in C14, C15 and C16. Restored, and chancel largely rebuilt in C19. Walls of stone and flint, roofs tiled, some with stone eaves courses. Nave, chancel, west tower, south porch, north chapel and porch. Tower C14, has walls of banded ironstone and flint. Plain parapet. Belfry has 2-light windows with Perpendicular tracery. North porch, C16 has gable with parapet. Semi-circular outer and inner arches. Collar-rafter roof, C16. North chapel, C15, extended eastward in C16. Walls of stone and flint, with brick buttresses. Two 3-light square-headed windows, the western one traceried. Small blocked rectangular opening below this. Shouldered arched doorway - appears C19 renewal. East wall of chapel has C16 3-light window. East and south walls of chancel C19, of stone and flint with 3-light Gothic style windows. South porch C14, has gable with parapet and moulded coping. Moulded Gothic arch. South wall of nave C14, of stone and flint, has two 2-light square-headed windows with ogee tracery, and one single-light ogee-headed window. Internally, north chapel divided from nave by two-bay arcade with square central pier. West arch, C12, is semi-circular. East arch, C16, has panelled soffit. Chancel arch C18. C16 arch with panelled soffit between chancel and chapel, rest of chancel C19. Chancel roof. C19, a plastered barrel vault. Nave has straight-sided barrel roof of pine, C19. North chapel has C16 plastered barrel roof with moulded timber nibs. In chapel, late C15 tomb recess contains C17 table tomb. Good C17 wall monument. Several C18 wall monuments in nave and chancel. Font, late C12, octagonal bowl, with round-arched panelling, on circular base with corner shafts. Nave seating includes some C16 bench ends. North chapel apparently belonged to local Priory.
