4/136 Steps House, including coach house at rear

GV II

Detached house - probably originally a farmhouse. Late C16-early C17. Plastered walls, but rear wall incorporates some timber framing and whole building may be of timber frame origin. Hipped thatched roof, 2 brick stacks set in from ends. 2 storeys. Panelled door under shallow pentice hood. Ground floor has, at right end, a C19 bay window with stone mullions, and hipped tiled roof. Also, on ground floor, 2 casements with glazing bars and one with bars in upper panes only. First floor has 3 casements with glazing bars. Single storey rear lean-to, with hipped slate roof. Internally, some deep chamfered and stopped ceiling beams. (R.C.H.M. Monument 14. Dorset, Vol V). Coach house in garden, at rear, probably C18, has walls partly timber framed, partly brick. Hipped thatched roof. Rear lean-to timber framed with concrete tiled roof. Large timber doors.
