2.
Built after 1878 by George Burt. Square on plan with a tiled roof of concave profile
surmounted by terra-cotta dragons, supported on stone Tuscan columns from the toll-
houses removed from John Rennie's Waterloo Bridge (C1817 - re-erected c1878). Raised
on a stone terrace with balustrated parapet and approached by stone steps. Floor paved
with encaustic tiles removed from the House of Commons c1880. Three mutilated stone
statues in front of the Temple, from the second Royal Exchange. Two may be of
Edward I and Henry V (RCEII) - probably C17. Purbeck House and its ancillary buildings
are listed for their historic interest in connection with George Burt and for the large
number of relics of older London buildings. See "Curiosities of Swanage, or Old London
by sea", by David Lewen ARIBA and J Bernard Calkin MAFSA. RCHM Monument 40.
