Rhinefield Bridge over Blackwater stream north of Rhinefield House
II
Bridge carrying minor road over stream. 1949 or 1950. Hampshire County Council, E W H Gifford, County Bridge Engineer. Prestressed concrete deck, timber parapet fences. Clear span 33ft. First of a number of bridges in the New Forest constructed of precast, post-tensioned units using Freyssinet system. Units stressed together transversely. Slight vertical curvature makes cables straighter to reduce friction; appropriate to road with limited speed and to woodland surroundings. Timber fence almost certainly not original, but similar. An attractive bridge, probably the first prestressed concrete bridge in England designed by an English engineer. (Recent Developments in Highway Bridge Design in Hampshire: Gifford E W H: 1952-).
