FORE STREET
No. 84
Former Methodist Sunday School
GV II
Alternatively known as: The Manor House, No.84 FORE STREET. Large schoolroom relating to Methodist chapel. Late C19. Squared rubble brought to course and stone and brick dressings including granite sills; dry Delabole slate roofs with projecting eaves and verges; crested clay ridge tiles; brick axial and rear lateral stacks. Deep irregular plan with wings projecting from the right-hand side; built into slope at rear. Italianate style. 3 storeys; symmetrical 3-bay front with projecting pedimented central bay. Mostly original windows, most of which are horned sashes. Central bay, with end pilasters, has paired sashes under a blind traceried lunette within the pediment linked to a moulded impost string as the lower element of the pediment. There is a sill entablature over moulded entablature forming the heads of a group of 4 x 1st-floor sashes with pilaster mullions and with capitals to the end pilasters. The ground floor has 4 transomed casement windows under an arcade of moulded round arches and with pilaster mullions. Each flanking bay has 2 round-arched lights over small triple lights over a gabled and round-arched doorway with moulded ordered arch on pilaster jambs; C20 glazed doors. Right-hand return is 1:2:1:1 bays. The 2 recessed bays are 2 storeys with tall traceried 3-light round-arched 1st-floor windows. The 3-storey flanking bays have triple lights to upper floors, the 2nd-floor lights with round- arched heads. The right-hand bay has similar window to its upper floor. The other floors have segmental-arched openings. INTERIOR not inspected.
HISTORY: This is a good example of a purpose-built Methodist schoolroom distinguished by its Italianate style, prominently sited next to a good group of listed buildings including the chapel.
