Public house and attached brewery. cl870. Red brick with grey engineering brick plinth and painted stone dressings. Hipped slate roof with oversailing eaves. Brick lateral stacks. PLAN: Rectangular almost square on plan. Central entrance lobby and central bars serving saloon on left and public bar on right with smoke room behind the public bar, and rear entrance and stairhall behind the central bar. The brewery is attached to the left [W]. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and cellar. Symmetrical 3-bay south front. Flight of steps at centre to round-headed doorway with flanking canted bay windows with colonnettes, the left bay has cellar doorway below and the right bay has a round cast-iron ventilator to the cellar. First floor three segmental headed windows with moulded architraves and cill band, cill band continues on side elevations where there are similar first floor windows, the ground floor windows have cornices with consoles; 4-pane sashes. Rear wall painted brick. INTERIOR: Public bar has counter with panelled front with large consoles, bar back and stained glass screens to lobby and stairhall. Smoke room has original chimneypiece. Saloon's bar counter replaced. All three rooms have original benches against the walls. Stairhall at rear has elliptical arch with consoles and open-tread staircase with stick balusters. BREWERY: Long narrow rectangular red brick 2-storey building with slate gable-ended roof; segmental arch doorways and windows; NE walls brickwork has been painted; interior not inspected.
