9/5 Garden pavilions, walls and terraces immediately south and south west of Athelhampton Hall, including wall and archway linking gardens to stables
GV II*
Garden pavilions, walls and terraces. c1891, by Francis Inigo Thomas, for Cart de la Fontaine. Ham stone walls enclosing 3 linked gardens. Boundary wall linking these to the stables (qv) of rubble stone with moulded coping. 4-centred moulded arched opening flanked by buttresses. At south west end of gardens, a raised terrace, approached from garden by stone steps. Low balustrade to garden side, with moulded capping and obelisks at intervals. Solid wall at rear, with seat in centre, also capped by obelisks. At each end of terrace a square ashlar pavilion, with pyramidal hipped tiled roof with stone eaves courses. Corinthian angle pilasters, supporting entablature - cornice with egg and tongue moulding. In centre of inner facing walls a glazed door in moulded surround with solid semi-circular tympanum, carrying masks, representing east and west winds. Cartouche with date, 1891. In other faces of pavilions, stone mullion and transome windows. Below terrace, on garden side, rectangular pools. Pool with stone fountain in centre of garden. North-east of this garden the Corona, a garden bounded by-circular stone wall with scalloped top, with obelisks. On east side a 4-centred archway. This Corona linked to the south west garden by steps, and an opening flanked by ashlar piers with moulded caps, surmounted by ornamental lead urns. Ornamental iron gates. Similar opening between the Corona and the north-east garden, piers here capped by stone lions. South east of the Corona a stone wall links the 2 outer gardens, containing two 4-centred archways with niche between them. North east garden has circular pool in centre, with stone fountain. Dividing this from the house a stone balustrade. In the south east wall a round-headed opening - moulded and flanked by niches with lead statues. In rear, north east, wall an opening flanked by ashlar piers with moulded caps surmounted by eagles. Ornamental iron gates. Good example of late C19 garden structures and layout.
