14/116 Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive), The Stables
GV II
Former stables, coach house, and cottages to ilsington House (qv) now converted to 8 residential units. Dated 1868, converted c1984. Brick walls, with some stone dressings, slate roofs, part hipped part gabled. Part single storey, part one storey and attics part 2 storeys. Buildings grouped round 3 sides of courtyard, open to south. Nos 1 and 2 form the east range. Mainly single storey, 2 ledged doors, and 6 sashes with glazing bars under gauged arches. At south end of No. 1, a 2-storey block, with hipped roof. Plain casements on each floor. No. 3 the north range, the original coach house. Replanned on 2 floors. Hipped roof. Central projecting gabled bay. 3 large elliptical arched openings, now filled with glazing in timber frames. In centre bay, above opening, a sundial and bull's eye window. Nos 4 and 5 form the west range. 2 storeys. Central projecting gabled bay, with sack hoist. 2 battened doors (one in the bay) with fanlights, under gauged arches. 5 sashes with glazing bars on ground floor, and 6 on first floor. Nos. 6 and 7, original cottages, at south end of Nos. 4 and 5. Facing the courtyard, a gabled projecting wing. Battened door with fanlight in stone shouldered arched opening. Also in this wing, ground and first floors each have a stone mullioned window with cast iron glazing, under hoodmould. Right of gable a similar single light window on each floor. On south elevation, a ledged door, with fanlight, in stone shouldered arched opening, with slight projection. At right end a projecting gabled wing, with date plaque, 18b8. In gable, ground floor has a 3-light stone mullioned winnow, as described above. Similar 2-light window on first floor. Left of the wing, on ground floor, one 2-light and one 3-light similar window. On first floor, one single light and two 2-light similar windows. 2 brick stacks on ridge, with plinths and oversailing caps. No. 8, west of Nos. 4 and 5, has, facing west, a projecting bell turret containing, on ground floor, a ledged door with fanlight in stone shouldered arched opening. Stone offset above door, and second date plaque. The turret, rising above eaves, has a lead spire, square on plan. Bell-cote below this with stone traceried sides. In the main range, ground floor has two 2-light and one single-lignt stone mullioned window as described above. Similar windows on first floor, without hoodmoulds. One brick stack on ridge. A good conversion.
