3/132 Bridehead 26.1.56 - II*

Country House in grounds. Rebuilt c.1837 by F. P. Robinson, and extended westwards by B. Ferrey in 1850's. North west wing demolished, C20. Stone and brick walls, rendered. Plat band with quatrefoils in lozenges. Small projecting corner turrets with blind lancets at ground floor level. String and crenellated parapet tops. Hipped clay-tile roof with stone stacks at left and right hand. 2 storeys. 4 windows, 4 light stone mullions with 4-centred heads and labels over. Fixed wooden windows to ground floor with glazing-bars in lozenge pattern. First- floor with casement windows. Shield-of-arms centrally in a quatrefoil. Foliage in spandrels. Front door at centre with 3-centred head. Recess-panel door with lancet heads, bowtel mouldings. Porch, wood, with quatrefoil columns, winged, with a plain entablature over. South elevation, of 7 bays, with tall cross-transom windows. Plat band, cornice and parapet carried through as on east elevation. Library bay (Ferrey) at west end, with polygonal corner buttress. Conservatory, now swimming pool, with windows having 4-centred heads with central mullion, divided at top. Interior: front ground floor rooms with panelling and doors of early C19, all with ribbed panels. Gadrooned cornice-mouldings. Fireplace in study, black marble with incised Soanic pilasters and anthemion motif. Prayer Room, by Ferrey, with 3 major bay divisions, having 4-centred arches, responds and plain capitals. Perpendicular style fireplace and bookcases, all with crenellated parapets. Library, by Ferrey, with complete library fittings, bookcases to 2 metres with a fleuroned string. Octagonal responds. Fireplace with large ogee head and crenellated cornice. Grate. Compartmented ceiling, with moulded ribs, fully bossed at the intersections. First floor, right front room, stone fireplace with very depressed-arch head, and straight-chamfered jambs, stopped, C16, reset. Left front room, stone doorhead, 4-centred with recess spandrels, C16 reset. Stone fireplace, similar to the above. (RCHM Dorset I, p.37 (2). C. J. Bailey, The Bride Valley, pp. 14-15.)
