Details

CHEAP STREET 1. 1625 (North Bust Side) No 51 (Swan Hotel) ST 6316 1/270 7.4.71 II GV 2. Late C18/early C19 front with mid C19 extension of 3 bays continuing front to north of yard entry. Steep pitch gable end tiled roof, projecting bracketed eaves. The original part is of 3 storeys the mid C19 extension of 2 tall ones. Painted stone, partly stucco faced. Stone plinth and rusticated chamfered quoins. Earlier part has flush framed sash windows: 2 on 2nd floor, 1 single and a pair on 1st floor and 1 single on ground floor. Yard entry with large flush panelled double doors. The mid C19 extension has 3 recessed sashes 1st floor and 2 tall camber headed paired sashes, dividing pilasters with keystones over. Deeply recessed panelled house door with rectangular fanlight. Wings extend to rear on both sides of yard, former service buildings, stables and coach houses, 2 and 3 storeys with single storey stables: stone rubble some with red brick dressings. That part directly adjoining original house has 4 dormers, 3 flush framed sashes 1st floor, later flush architrave framed sashes and glazed and panelled door with side lights on ground floor, some of glazing bars intact. Part of southern wing possibly of C17 origin; date plaque of 1822 also to this wing.

Nos 29 to 53 (odd) and No 53A form a group.
