Details

738/7/164 DURNGATE STREET 08-MAY-75 (North side) 6 (Formerly listed as: DUMGATE STREET 6)

GV II House, probably C18, predating 1771. The building has undergone some alteration.

MATERIALS: Ridgeway or Portland hammer-dressed stone, with red brick voussoirs. The building has a pitched tile roof brick, with high brick chimney stacks.

PLAN: The current OS map shows the site divided into two parts, the narrower western portion having an extension to the north-west, and the eastern portion having a northern extension with a slight projection to west. Earlier OS maps do not indicate this central division, but instead show the building as rectangular in plan, with a number of small outbuildings to north which may form the core of the present northern extensions. Until 1902 at least, No.s 6 and 7 Durngate Street shared a rear courtyard.

EXTERIOR: The street frontage is two-storeys high, in three-bays. On the first-floor are three segmental-headed windows fitted with casement frames. The front door is set in a plain doorway with segmental-headed brick arch, similar to those over the windows. To the left of the door, an embrasure has been cut for a bay window which is contained within the thickness of the wall. This unusual feature - clearly a later alteration - may be evidence of a former door. The attic is lit by two dormer windows with casements. INTERIOR: Not inspected.

HISTORY: Durngate Street lies at the centre of the town of Dorchester; the site has been occupied since Roman times. Durngate Street is shown as being almost completely built up on both sides in Hutchins's map of 1771; though the street also contains later buildings. No. 6 Durngate Street is thought to pre-date 1771.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: 6 Durngate Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Architectural: Externally, a noteworthy example of a modest, two-storey Dorchester house of the C18 * Group Value: With adjacent listed buildings, and with listed buildings elsewhere in Durngate Street
