Details
1. 1655 ABBEY WALK (North East Side) The Abbey House ST 8622 2/7 20.6.52. II 2. The semi-basement may incorporate remains of the Abbey buildings. The foundations of the west end of the Abbey Church lie in the garden. The house dates from the C16 to early C17, and remains of this date include basement windows, and a fine enriched plaster ceiling; formerly contemporary fireplaces as well. The house was more or less rebuilt in the C18 and much altered subsequently. The staircase and ceiling above are Georgian. North-West front of 2 storeys and basement with attic, 5 bays. Ashlar. Stone modillion cornice and parapet. 3 windows on 2nd floor; canted bay at east end. Entrance in C18 on this side; doorway has since been removed to east end of same front. Entrance was in south-east front which has early C20 castellated stone porch built up over earlier foundations; incorporates fragments of medieval sculpture possibly from medieval abbey of Shaftesbury.
