CHIVELSTONE EAST PRAWLE SX 73 NE 9/12 Fuschia Cottage
G. V. II
Small house. C16, altered in C17 and extended in C19. Plastered stone rubble walls. Slate roof, gabled to right end and hipped to left. Plastered rubble stack at gable end. Plan: 2-room plan with solid wall between them. The right-hand room appears to have been open to the roof originally and possibly heated by an open hearth fire. This room would have been floored over and a fireplace inserted in the early - mid C17. C19 rear outshut built and outbuilding added at left-hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of C20 1 and 2-light casements. Shallow C20 leanto at centre with part-glazed door to the right. C20 door to left end with small outbuilding projecting beyond it. Interior: rough but fairly substantial ceiling beams in right-hand room. Fireplace has possible C17 rough slate lintel. Over this end of the house are 2 original raised cruck trusses with morticed cranked collars and trenched purlins, cut off at the apex. Both appear to be smoke-blackened, the right-hand one more heavily.
