CHIVELSTONE EAST PRAWLE SX 73 NE 9/15 Cooling's Barn
G. V. II
Converted barn incorporating adjoining cottage. Mid C17 and C18, altered late C20. Slatestone rubble walls. Slate roof, hipped to left, gabled to front wing. Stone rubble gable end stack with dripcourses. Plan: originated apparently as 1-room plan cottage with fireplace on front end wall and newel stairs in projection on side wall. C18 threshing barn forming main range added at right-angles behind barn. A conversion and renovation is currently taking place (March 1989). Exterior: 2 storeys. L-shaped front with barn forming main range which has a leanto along the front. Small window openings with late C20 2-light casements without glazing bars to cottage forming wing at right-hand end. Doorway to barn at right of centre. End entrance to cottage through right-hand end of leanto. Outer side wall of cottage has a rectangular stair projection. Interior: the cottage has its original fireplace with a slate slab lintel. Stone newel staircase. Original roof truss survives consisting of straight principals with morticed apex, holes for threaded purlins, a very small collar set high up halved and dovetailed on and evidence of a similar cut-off collar lower down. The trusses themselves appear to have been reused as they have regularly spaced peg holes along them.
