SOUTH MILTON SX 74 SW 5/108 Higher Sutton Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Early - mid C17 remodelled in mid - later C19. Slatestone rubble walls. Gable ended slate roof with Victorian crested ridge tiles. Projecting rubble front lateral stack, brick stack at left gable end and one at side of 2 storey porch. Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan, lower end to the right was heated by fireplace on front wall, as is hall, which has 2 storey bay at the front of it. Large 2 storey porch. Remodelled in C19 and refenestrated but retaining its basic C17 form. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front of circa late C19 2 and 4-light casements apart from later C20 2-light one on 1st floor of porch. Paired 2-pane sashes on ground floor of gabled 2 storey hall bay left of centre. C20 glazed porch to its left. Very large C17 2 storey (with attic) porch to right of centre has roundheaded South Hams type doorway with 6-panel C19 door behind. To right of porch is wide projecting lateral stack which has been cut off at the eaves. Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but known to contain C17 cross beams to hall. Other features may survive.
