SOUTH MILTON SX 74 SW 5/113 Farm building immediately to south of Lower Sutton Farmhouse

G.V. II

Farm building, originally stable and shippon. Circa early C19. Finely jointed coursed slatestone walls. Slate roof, hipped to left end, right-hand part gabled. Plan: 2 distinct ranges. Left-hand part is stable with central entrance and loft above, reached by internal steps with independent access at right-hand end. The section to the right has a shippon below and loft over. Exterior: 2 storeys in 2 distinct ranges, the lower left-hand one has symmetrically arranged 3-window front with central doorway. All openings have dressed flat stone arches over. At right-hand end is full height round arched doorway with straight flight of stone steps behind. Taller shippon to right has 3 doorways on ground floor with 2 small windows between and 1st floor loading doorway to left. Flat stone arches over openings. This is a particularly good quality example of its type.
