SOUTH MILTON SOUTH MILTON VILLAGE SX 64 SE 4/133 Rose Cottage

G. V. II

Small house. Circa early C16, altered in early - m id C17, restored in late C20. Slatestone rubble walls, the front wall apparently refaced in the late C20. Gable ended slate roof. Brick stack at each gable end. Plan: 2-room plan, with fireplace at each end, larger room to the left. Originally an open hall with central hearth floored over in circa mid C17. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front, 3 windows on ground floor, of late C20 small-paned casements. C20 plank door to left in round-arched doorway (part of C20 refacing). Interior: Ground floor and chamfered cross beams with drawer and bar stops and close-set joists, also chamfered. Wooden newel stair. 4 original jointed cruck roof trusses with slightly cranked collars and 3 threaded purlins, all smoke blackened. This is an unusual survival of a small medieval house retaining its original roof. Its original use is unclear considering the quality of its carpentry and it may once have been larger or been connected with the medieval building immediately behind it (q.v. 1 - 4 Shute Cottages).
