Details
SHERFORD SX 74 NE 3/73 Stancombe Farmhouse 26.1.67 G.V. II
Farmhouse. Circa later C17 and early C19. Front range has stuccoed walls, exposed slate rubble walls to rear wing. Hipped slate roof to front, gabled to rear wing. Brick stack at rear gable end and one at either end of front. Plan: the older part of the house is at the rear and it is likely to have been truncated by the building of the new front so it does not survive in its entirety. It consists of 3 rooms with a larger heated one at the centre and a passage between it and the room in front which leads to a newel stair. The front block has 2 principal rooms with a central entrance hall which leads to a staircase behind the right-hand room. Exterior: 2 storeys with attic to rear wing. Symmetrical 5-window front of late C20 facsimile tall 12-pane horned sashes. Central roundheaded doorway with early C19 6-panel door which has a semi-circular fanlight above. Contemporary or slightly later C19 verandah along the front supported on wooden pillars. Rear wing has C19 leanto along outer face. On inner face are late C20 small-paned casements and a C17 studded plank door to left of centre. Interior: rear wing has roughly chamfered cross beams, one with hollow step- stops, in main room. Timber newel stair has a short section of C17 balustrade at the top with heavy moulded handrail and turned balusters. On the 1st floor is one C18 fielded 2-panel door and a contemporary cupboard also with fielded panel doors and H-L hinges. The front part of the house has panelled shutters and moulded plaster cornices to the 2 ground floor front rooms.
