GV II

Cattle shelters and adjoining pair of cottages. Circa early to mid Cl9. Local stone rubble, upper sections of the outside wall are cob partly clad in corrugated iron. Corrugated iron hipped roof. Plan: Trapezoid on plan. 14-bay (4:3:5:2) single story cattle shelters built around a fold yard with a cart entrance in the lower south east corner and a wide loading doorway into a 4-bay cattle shelter or cartshed on the outer south side where the outside ground level is lower. Also against the outer south side a pair of one-room plan attached lean-to cottages. Exterior: The cattle shelters facing the fold yard have open fronts and 12 circular slightly tapered stone rubble piers.(2 of the original total of 14 piers are missing). The floors under the shelters are cobbled. On the outer south side a 4-bay open-fronted cattle shelter or cartshed with rectangular stone rubble piers (rounded corners on the inside) and a corrugated iron lean-to roof. To the left also on the south side a roofless pair of attached 1-room plan cottages with a monopitch lean-to roof with tall stone rubble end stacks, the right hand of the 2 doorways is blocked. Roof: cambered collars lapped and pegged to the face of the principals with halved and pegged apexes. This is an interesting C19 agricultural building. Although it is known as Stancombe Linhays they are not linhays is the usual sense of an open-fronted hayloft over a cattle shelter.
