ASHPRINGTON SX85Nll 6/47 PAINSFORD Outbuilding Immediately South East of Painsford Manor
GV II
A building associated with Painsford Manor (qv), now used as a farm building. C17. Dressed slate rubble. Asbestos slate hipped roof. Plan: Probably originally a 2-room plan, although the partition between the 2 rooms is C20. The right hand ground floor room to the south is heated from a gear lateral stack with an oven. The left hand ground floor room to the north is unheated and has a doorway at the back giving direct entry. The first floor is one large room now open to the roof, with a lateral fireplace at the front of the left hand end. The fireplace in the rear lateral stack at the other end appears to be a later alteration. The original purpose of the building is uncertain but it may be on or near the site of the putative south east wing of Painsford Manor (qv). Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window west front. All the openings have finely dressed slate segmented arches. They are all windows, their frames missing, except for the ground floor left which is now a doorway. The rear elevation has a projecting lateral stack towards the left hand end either an oven in the angle, and a finely dressed slate chamfered segmental arch doorway to the right of centre. There are various later openings in the rear wall including a wide doorway to the right. Interior: The first floor fireplace in the front wall of the left end has finely dressed chamfered slate jambs with pyramid stops and a large slate lintel with a hollow-chamfered soffit. The ground floor fireplace in the rear lateral stack to the right is blocked and the fireplace above has a red brick flat arch. Roof: collars are pegged to the face of straight principals.
