Farmhouse and adjoining outbuilding. An early C18 remodelling and
extension of an early C17 or earlier house. Slate rubble with red brick
window arches, slurried grouted scantle slate roof with gabled ends and
early crested clay ridge tiles. The rear outshuts have asbestos slate
roofs. Cast iron moulded gutters at the front with lion mask joints. The
outbuilding at the lower left hand end has a steeply pitched corrugated
iron roof ramped up tot he higher main roof of the house. 2 rendered
lateral stacks at the rear of the front rooms of the house rising from the
rear outshut roofs; an axial stack with red brick shaft at the lower end
of the house. Rendered stack at the lower left hand gable end of the
outbuilding.
Plan: the existing house is the result of an extensive circa early C18
remodelling and enlargement of an early C17 or earlier house whose lower
end was probably to the left (west), its hall heated from a lateral stack
at the back is now the hall/kitchen and the cross or through passage would
have been where the small room is now situated between the hall/kitchen and
the lower left end outbuilding. The circa early C18 remodelling created a
double depth plan house with 2 principal front rooms, a large hall/kitchen
to the left, a parlour to the right and an entrance hall between with a
dog-leg staircase at the back in a 1-storey plus attic outshut and with
shallow unheated rooms behind the parlour and hall/kitchen. At the lower
left lend there is a long range, now an outbuilding but with a gable end
stack with a fireplace with ovens. Between this outbuilding and the
hall/kitchen there is a small heated room possibly created in the C19 in
the cross or through passage of the original house.
Exterior: 2 storeys (and attic not in use). Almost symmetrical 3-window
front to the house plus a 1-window bay to the left. All the original
window openings with segmental red brick arches with small keystones; the
window openings are of various sizes, larger parlour window to the right
and bedchamber window above. Only the first floor window to the left has
an early 3-light casement with glazing bars and old glass, the others have
been replaced by late C20 casements; the right hand windows are said to
have been tripartite sashes. The 1-window bay to the left has C19 2-light
casements with glazing bars. Central doorway with C18 fielded 6-panel door
with small rectangular overlight with glazing bars; C18 or C19 open-fronted
porch with seats inside; its gabled roof a replacement.
To left the steep corrugated iron roof sweeps down over the lower end
outbuilding which has blocked openings and one loft door to the left.
Rear elevation: The main roof is carried down at the back over the 1-storey
and attic rear outshuts either side of the central stair tower which rises
to the attic and has a hipped roof. Various small casements at the rear,
the first floor of the stair tower has a C19 fixed light window with margin
glazing bars. The rendered lateral stacks rise from the roof of the
outshut, the kitchen stack to the right is larger and has slate weathering
at the base of the shaft. There is a single storey outshut to the right
behind the lower end outbuilding.
Interior: Most of the C18 joinery is intact including fielded 2, 4 and 6-
panel doors. The C18 panelled doors on the first floor also survive. the
parlour to the right has a moulded wooden cornice and a niche in the higher
end wall with a round arch, fluted pilasters and shaped shelves; moulded
dado rail and chimneypiece with fluted pilasters, dentil cornice and
Victorian cast-iron grate. The hall/kitchen has exposed ceiling joists and
a large open fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel with hollow step stops
and a C18 moulded cornice shelf. The small room off the hall/kitchen has a
small late C19 chimney piece. The partition between the hall/kitchen and
the entrance hall is a plank door screen with moulded muntins. The hall
floor is paved in slate. Panelled door at bottom of the staircase with
bars like glazing bars in the top panel but without glass. The dog-leg
staircase has splat balusters, moulded handrail and square newels with
moulded caps.
There is said to be a large open fireplace with ovens at the lower gable
end of the lower left end outbuilding but this was inaccessible at the time
of the survey.
The early C18 roof survives over the house, it has straight principals with
lapped and pegged collars. The roof over the lower end outbuilding also
has lapped and pegged collars.
