GV II

Pair of cottages, originally one house and once a public house and post office. C17 or earlier, remodelled and extended in circa late C18 or C19. Roughcast stone rubble. Slate roof with back glazed ridge tiles, hipped at left hand end and half hipped at right end. Rendered stacks a either end and earlier axial (originally gable end) stack rear left hand end with heightened shaft and lateral stack at rear of right hand end with rendered shaft. plan and development: The main front range has a 3-room plan. The centre and right hand room is the extent of the original house of 2-room plan probably with a central through passage. The larger left hand room heated from a gable end stack and the right hand room has a lateral stack at the back with a newel staircase to its side. In the lat C18 or early C19 a 1- room plan addition was built at the left end possibly at the same time as the house was converted into a pair of cottages, No 1 occupying the centre and left rooms and the front of the through passage and No 2 has the back of the passage and the right hand room. In the C20 an outshut was built behind No 2. Exterior: storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window north front. Small C18 or early C19 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars except for circa late C19 2-light casement with glazing bars on first floor to right of centre and late C20 2-light casements to right on ground and first floors; all with slate sills. lThe ground floor window to left of centre has C17 chamfered timber lintel with bar stops. No l's doorway to left of centre is the original through passage doorway and has a large open-fronted roughcast porch with a lean-to scantle slate roof, sezats inside on the side walls and a C20 glazed door. No 3 which is a single storey C20 addition set back on right is not included. Rear elevation not inspected. Interior: only No 2 on right was inspected inside. Renewed ceiling beams. Fireplace at rear with large slate lintel, one end on corbel. The newel staircase is rounded turret to right of stack has been replaced. The roof was also replaced in C20.
