MODBURY NEW ROAD SX 6451-6551 (west side) 7/151 Gateway in wall adjacent to Woodturners

II

Isolated gateway in length of boundary wall. Arch C16 or C17, probably built in present position early C19. Granite surround, rubble wall. Opening has granite surround with roll mould, set flush to wall face, and carried to basket-handle head, but with separate projecting keystone; contains a C20 door in C17 plank form, but with early hinges. Door is set down from adjacent road surface. Set in stretch of rubble wall to saddle-back coping about 2.25 metres from road surface, but higher on garden side, and extending about 1.5 metres either side of opening to straight joints in masonry. Steps down within. Door gave access to Poundwell House (qv) and, like many fragments in Modbury, may have been obtained from the demolition of Champernowne House.
