SLAPTON SX84NW Pittaford Farmhouse 5/76 26.1.67 GV II

Farmhouse. Circa early to mid C17, remodelled in circa early C19 and modernised in C20. Rendered stone rubble. Asbestos tile roof with gabled ends. Rendered axial and gable end stacks the end stacks with short brick shafts. Plan and development: Originally a 2-room and through passage plan, both rooms heated from gable end stacks, the higher right-hand (west) room is larger. On the north front there is a large 2-storey porch. The small outshut on the left side of the porch might be integral or a later C17 addition. The third room at the right-hand (west) end of the main range is a circa late C18 or early C19 addition; it has a gable end stack and a blocked loft doorway on the south front. In circa early C19 the house was remodelled and reorientated so that the rear (south) elevation became the front, another outshut was built on the north (now the back) and the passage was widened to form a stairhall. The single storey wing on the left-hand end (south west) of the new south front was probably also added at the same time. Exterior: 2 storey. Asymmetrical north front with large 2-storey gabled porch to left of centre with dressed slate round arch doorway, C20 plank door and C20 plastic window above; slate in apex of gable pierced with shapes of harshoes and Catherine-wheels. To right and left of porch large outshuts obscure the front of house; the short outshut to left of porch appears to be integral or possibly added slightly later and has a C20 plastic window. 2 similar windows in later longer outshut on right of porch. Rear south elevation is the early C19 front; symmetrical 3-window elevation; 2 C20 replacement sashes on first floor, that at centre is a 2-light sash, both the ground floor and the frist floor left-hand windows replaced with C20 casements without glazing bars; the ground floor right-hand window is a C20 3-light casement with glazing bars. Doorway to right of centre has C19 flush and fielded panel door, the top panel glazed and with C20 gabled porch. Projecting on left a small C19 single storey wing. Interior: No exposed ceiling beams but some early C19 joinery. Higher end room has fireplace with high-set cambered timber lintel with slight chamfer and no stops. Partition on higher side of passage rebuilt. Passage widened to stairhall containing early to mid C19 staircase with column newel, moulded balusters and moulded handrail. The blocked lower end fireplace has a chamfered wooden lintel. The doorway in the left-hand (east) side of porch into possible integral outshut has an ovolo moulded square-headed wooden frame with run-out stops. The roof is a C19 or C20 softwood structure with pegged and nailed collars.
