GV II
House divided into 3 cottages. Early C17 or earlier, extended at higher end (Fern Cottage) in C20. Whitewashed stone rubble, possibly with some cob. Thatched roof with gabled ends, Fern Cottage on right reclad in asbestos tiles. Gable end stacks, left end shaft rebuilt in brick right end heightened in brick and front lateral stack with tall stone rubble tapered shaft with slate weathering and set-offs. Plan: 3 room and through a cross passage plan, the lower left end and inner room at the right end have gable end stacks and the hall has a lateral stack at the front. Subsequently, divided into 3 cottages; No. 3 occupies the lower end room and passage into which a straight staircase has been inserted; No. 2 is in the central hall; No. 1 (Fern Cottage) occupies the inner room and has a C20 2-storey extension at the higher end with single storey outshuts at the front and back. There are also C20 single storey outshuts behind Nos. 2 and 3. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window south east front to road. C19 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars and C20 plate glass window in place of doorway to right. To left of centre, No. 3 has C19 6-panel door and to its right No. 2 has a C20 glazed door to the right of which is the projecting lateral stack with set-offs, slate weathering and a tall tapered shaft. At the right hand end Fern Cottage has a C20 glazed porch on the side of a C19 outshut on the front of the extension. The rear elevation not inspected. Interior: No. 1 Fern Cottage (former inner room) has exposed later joists, C20 fireplace and C20 straight staircase in place of former stone newel stair rear to stack. No. 2 (former hall) was not inspected but is said to have large fireplace in lateral stack. No. 3 at lower end has fireplace with timber lintel and concealed ceiling beams. Circa late C18 roof with roughly fashioned collars halved, lapped and pegged to straight principals.
