SLAPTON SANDS ROAD SX8244 SLAPTON 12/94 Old Walls including outbuilding adjoining south

II

House. Circa 1720, extended in C19. Rendered stone rubble with masonry joint lining. Asbestos tile hipped roof. End and axial stacks with yellow clay louvred pots. Plan and development: The original early C18 house in the 3-room plan main range with a stairwell between the central and left hand rooms. The left hand room was the parlour heated from an end stack, the central room to the right of the stairhall was the hall-kitchen heated from an axial stack on its right side which also serves a fireplace heating the smaller kitchen at the right hand end (possibly originally an unheated service room). In the C19 a single storey kitchen wing was built on the front of the right end with a service doorway on the left hand corner; this wing connected the house to a traphouse and/or stables (with a loft above) on the lower road level in front. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. 3:1 bay south front, the 3 left bays are symmetrical. C18 and C19 12-pane sashes, those on the ground floor taller 15-pane sashes, all in exposed cases but 2 at the centre of the first floor have C19 replacement sashes. Central doorway with original fielded 3-panel door and C20 glazed outer door now enclosed within a large C20 conservatory across the front. On the right of the front a C19 single storey kitchen extension with 12-pane sash on inner return and a monopitch slate roof. At lower (road) level in front of kitchen wing a traphouse and/or stable with loft above, probably C19, painted stone rubble with hipped slate roof, door on left hand side with loft door above the wide entrance to road at front with a RSJ lintel. Rear elevation inaccessible. Interior: Most of the C18 joinery survives. The left hand ground floor room has segmentally arched alcoves with fluted architrave and small late C19 chimneypiece with moulded plaster segmental arch and C19 china cupboard with flanking balusters and carved panel doors. Bath rooms have panelled window shutters and C18 fielded 3-panel doors to hall, the right hand with C19 reeded architrave. Over the doors there are small late C19 carved canopies and small panels carved with rams heads. The dog-leg staircase has good chinoiserie balustrade square newels with moulded caps and moulded rail and string; C18 2-panel door to cupboard under the stair. First floor has C18 fielded 2-panel doors, the left hand chamber has fielded dado panelling. The right hand chamber has panelled cupboard doors. Roof: Straight principals with halves, lapped and pegged collars and staggered butt purlins over main section and over right hand end.
