STRETE SX84NW Southwood Manor House 5/237 including garden area wall adjoining East

II

Farmhouse. Circa late C16 or early C17, remodelled and extended probably later in C17 and with C18 and/or C19 and C20 alterations. Local slate rubble; front and rear walls of cross-wing are rendered. Asbestos tile roof with gabled ends, cross-wing is hipped. Stone rubble stacks with slate weathering; lower gable end stack and axial cross-wing stack. Plan: The original house had a 2 or 3 room plan, the large lower end room to the right (north) has a big gable end fireplace with an oven and newel staircase to a heated chamber above. The putative central cross or through passage divided from the lower end by a full-height wall has a blocked doorway at the back but the evidence for a front doorway is not clear. To the left (south) of the passage the cross-wing projecting at the front might be a C17 alteration of the original hall and the large stack at the back with an oven is possibly the hall's rear lateral stack. In the lower right hand angle of the cross-wing there is what appears to have been a stair turret. The small unheated room behind the cross-wing with a chamber above and the 2 outshuts behind the lower end are probably late C17 or C18 additions. In circa late C19 the cross-wing was sub-divided providing a stairwell on its lower right side and an entrance lobby at the front. In C20 an outshut was added at the back between the cross-wing and lower end outshuts and a partition has recently been inserted into the cross-passage. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical. 1:2 window east front with projecting hipped roof cross-wing to left with C20 sash on ground and first floors, C20 glazed door to right and square stair turret to right in the angle with the main range. The main range to the right has 2 small late C19 first floor sashes and left door to right and on the ground floor a C20 casement to left and right, that to the right is larger, partly blocked opening with slate hoodmould and chamfered timber lintel; doorway at centre of main range. Rear (west) has catslide roof over low outshut to left with small window openings and hipped roof wing to right with C20 casement and with C20 outshut in space between wing and outshut. The right hand (north) side of cross-wing has projecting oven and C19 3-light first floor casement window. The lower right hand (north) end has weathered string course at first floor level and first floor window right of stack with slate hoodmould. Including front garden area wall adjoining front (east) of south cross-wing, circa C19, slate rubble with pair of square gate-piers with rustic caps. Interior: Only the lower north end was inspected. It has chamfered closely-spaced cross-beams (joists) with ogee stops, dressed stone jambs and stone bread oven in the left hand side under stove newel stairs to chamber above which also has a fireplace with a chamfered timber lintel with straight cut stops. The lower end chamber ceiling is supported on closely spaced chamfered cross beams. The higher south end cross-wing was not inspected inside but was seen to have chamfered axial beam with stops and large axial fireplace at back of main room with chamfered timber lintel and oven in left hand corner. The roof over the lower north end has straight principal rafters with halved lapped and pegged collar and portions on the back of the principals.
