11/140 WESTOVER FARMHOUSE
II
House, formerly a farmhouse. Early C17, remodelled in early and later Cl9. Roughcast stone rubble slate roof with gabled ends and late C19 crested ridge tiles. Rendered stacks at gable end and at rear. Two-room-plan house, originally with through passage and kitchen to left with gable end stack and parlour to right with rear lateral stack and a stair turret at rear of the kitchen. It may have had a third (inner) room to right. In circa early C19 the first storey and roof were raised and the passage widened into a stair hall. Probably later in the C19 a two-storey outshut was built at the rear of the parlour; it contains the kitchen and has a rear lateral stack. Two storey. Symmetrical three-window range. C19 16-pane sashes, ground floor larger first floor centre narrower 12-pane sash. Central early C19 panelled door and large late C19 or early C20 glazed porch. Large projecting stack at left gable end with set offs. Former stair turret at rear right and two-storey outshut at rear left with lateral stack and late C19 cantilevered room in the angle to right. Interior: much of the C19 joinery survives including panelled doors and staircase with turned newel,Steep balusters and open string with st-raped tread ends. Parlour to right has early C19 panelled door flanked by round-headed niches with moulded architraves, and rear lateral fireplace blocked by C20 fireplace. Left hand room, the kitchen, has open fireplace with oven and ovolo moulded timber lintel reset at lower level. Roof space not inspected, but it is unlikely to contain pre-Cl9 trusses.
