Details
EAST WORLINGTON HALSE LANE SS 71 SE 8/23 Halse Farmhouse 20.2.67 GV II Farmhouse. C16 origin, floored C17, C18 wing, C20 refenestration. Cob on a rubble plinth, rendered and colourwashed, gabled and hipped straw-thatched roofs, stacks with brick and rendered shafts. Plan: overall L-shaped on plan. The main range has a 3-room and through-passage plan; the kitchen at the lower right end is heated from a gable end stack; the hall has a lateral stack at the back and the inner room has a gable end stack. It is likely that at least part of the house was open to the roof originally since remains of smoke-blackened timbers are reused in the roof structure of the C18 wing which was built at the front of the higher left end. Probably in the C19 the back of the through-passage was blocked and a stair inserted. Exterior: 1:3 windows, late C20 2- and 3-light casements with glazing bars. 2 door openings; that into right side of C18 wing with 6-panelled door, top 2 panels glazed; door opening to right onto former through-passage with plank door. Stack on right return and lateral stack at rear each with projecting rubble breast, rendered. Rear elevation with C19 casements. Interior: hall with chamfered axial ceiling beam, hollow stepped-stops, fireplace with chamfered wood bressumer ogee-stops. Inner room with similarly-moulded chamfered axial ceiling beam. Roof: C18 collar-beam roof, halved and lapped joints, some early smoke-blackened rafters reused over the wing.
