Details
EAST WORLINGTON RULL HILL SS 71 SE 8/27 Edgelake Cottage - - II House. Early C17. Rubble and cob, rendered; gabled straw-thatched roof; tall projecting front lateral stack with bread oven to right, rubble shaft. Plan: A 2-room and cross or through-passage plan, the hall/kitchen to the right heated from a lateral stack at the front with an integral hall bay to the right and with a stair-turret at the back of the hall. The lower end to the left was probably unheated originally, the partition on the lower left side of the passage has been removed so there is direct entry into this end which subsequently has been subdivided. Exterior: Single storey and attic; asymmetrical 1:1 windows, hall bay to right of hall stack, predominantly 2-and 3-light C19 casements with glazing bars, except small window to extreme right of frontage with heavily-chamfered wood frame, probably originally with wooden mullions. Door opening in a double-chamfered wooden frame to left of stack, peak head, plank door, directly adjacent to the doorway a thatched roof over the bread oven. Projecting stair-turret to rear, window with heavy wood frame. Interior: with remains of the plank and muntin screen including a doorframe with a 4-centred arch head. Hall with 3 chamfered ceiling cross beams with pyramid stops and fitted settle running into hall bay with C17 panelled back, fireplace with chamfered ceiling beam with pyramid stops. Stair-turret with stone steps and wooden treads, doorframe at top and bottom with peaked head. Low doorway with cambered head in partition between 2 rooms, now blocked. Roof: original roof structure, 2 bays with central closed truss with tie beam forming a partition between 2 first floor rooms. This is a good example of a small early C17 2-room plan house.
