Details
WITHERIDGE FORE STREET (north side), SS 81 SW Witheridge 9/77 No. 3 and The Lawn including barn at rear (north east) 20.2.67 GV II Pair of houses. Late C16, C17 wing at right-angles to rear of No.3, all much rebuilt. C18. Roughcast and colourwashed, probably on a rubble core, asbestos slated roof, hipped to left, gabled to the right, 2 brick stacks, 1 off-ridge to the left, the other on the ridge to the extreme right. Plan and development: 2 large rooms with rear lateral stacks flanking a C18 entrance hall. 2 large wings at right angles to rear probably added C17 forming a U-plan, barn at right-angles across rear forming a quadrangle. The plan of the house may originally have been of 3-unit and through-passage. Exterior: 2 storeys, 5 windows, 6 openings with 4-pane double-hung sashes, to extreme right of the first floor a 2-light C20 casement, and on the ground floor a C20 canted bay with a flat roof. 2 door openings, C20 doors, that to the left recessed, ledge hood on wooden brackets; door opening to extreme right also with a ledge hood, C20 half-glazed door with a sidelight. Interior: with early and late C18 joinery including doors, architraves and 2 staircases. C17 wing with chamfered ceiling beams. Roof: above No.3 with a late C16 jointed cruck truss, side-pegged posts run down to ground. Morticed ridge with diagonal ridge-piece and threaded purlins (these now missing). Remainder of roof C20. Barn with C18 pegged roof.
