Details

NEWTON ST CYRES WEST TOWN SX 89 NE 5/5 Halses and front garden wall - to east GV II Former farmhouse. Early C16 origins with C16, C17 and later improvements. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone stacks with brick tops exposed above thatched roof. Traditional 3-room and through passage plan, now 2 storeys throughout. Small inner room/dairy to right (north) end and large service room to lower end divided in late C18 - C19. Roof hipped to left, gabled to right. Passage door nearly central. To right casement to hall and ancillary door to inner room. To left 2 windows of different size. The thatch lifts to accommodate the 2 first floor windows. Roof structure was rebuilt in the late C18 - C19 but preserves fragments of original smoke-blackened roof supported on side-pegged jointed crucks. In late C16 - early C17 hall stack inserted backing onto passage towards front with rear having oak post-and-panel screen with segmental-headed door. Hall floored in C17 with scroll-stopped beam. From right end of front cob garden wall with pitched tile top curves round to enclose front garden stepping down in height.
