Rose Cottage
II
House, formerly row of 3 cottages. Mid - late C17, modernised 1984. Plastered cob
on rubble footings; cob and volcanic stone stacks, partly rebuilt and topped with
C19 brick; wheatreed thatched roof. Originally a row of 3, one-room cottages. 2-
storeys. Cob and brick stack with stone base projecting from left (east) gable.
Framed partition dividing east and central cottage. Large axial stack with
fireplaces on both sides between central and western cottage. Roof hipped to west
(right of front). Irregular 3-window front to road, and formerly one door to each
ground floor room (outer pair blocked by windows in 1984) and 2 small windows
between central and right door. Interior modernised 1984. Chamfered cross beam
with scroll stops to middle room and remains of 3 volcanic stone fireplaces with
side ovens. Original roof intact. Central first floor window blocked but early
frame exposed internally. Rare survival of early 1-room cottages.
