COLEBROOKE SX 79 NW 4/81 - Road Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Late C16-early C17 origins, extensively refurbished and enlarged in mid C19. Plastered cob on exposed rubble footings; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof. South-east facing main block has an altered 3-room-and-through-passage plan with inner room at right (north-eastern) end. Inner room has end stack, hall has axial stack backing onto passage and service end room has rear lateral stack. From each end mid C19 service blocks project at right angles and on left end is a C20 extension. Service end rear block has end stack. 2 storeys. Regular but not symmetrical 4-window front of mid C19 sashes. On the first floor, left of centre and over the door, is a 20-pane (8/12) sash. The rest are 25-pane (10/15) sashes and those on ground floor have late C19-early C20 external plank shutters. The doorway now contains a C20 door behind a contemporary gabled and slate-roofed porch. Low pitch roof is hipped each end. The outshot contains casements some with glazing bars. Both rear blocks are gable-ended. Interior: shows mostly C19 joinery detail and plaster but some earlier features are exposed in the main house. The service end room has a late C16-early C17 hollow chamfer and ovolo moulded crossbeam with no stops and the contemporary stone fireplace in the back wall has a soffit-chamfered and step stopped intel. The hall has a C17 rubble fireplace with a cambered, soffit-chamfered oak lintel resting on oak pads. Other early features probably survive behind later plaster. Roof of Cl9 king post trusses throughout.
