Details
SS 92 SE BAMPTON BRITON STREET, (south side), Bampton 6/25 Nos 16 and 16a -
GV II
House, divided into 2 cottages. C17 with C20 alterations. Whitewashed stone rubble ; slate roof, gabled at left end, hipped at right end ; axial stack with shaft projecting through roof to front of ridge, front lateral stack with stack projecting through eaves. Plan: 2 room and cross passage plan with C20 rear additions. The house has been divided into 2 using the cross passage as a common entrance. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a C20 stable door to the passage to right of centre with a porch canopy carried on brackets. Fenestration of C20 timber 2 and 3-light casements. Interior: The right hand room has an open fireplace with stone jambs and a chamfered lintel, rough cross beam. The left hand room has a blocked fireplace backing on to the passage with the original chamfered lintel intact ; chamfered cross beam with step stops. Roof: Not thoroughly inspected but some old purlins survive. The right hand truss appears to be a conventional collar rafter arrangement but Hulland refers to jointed crucks.
