BURRINGTON SS 61 NW

5/18 - Northcote Manor 9.6.52 - 11 Large house, now hotel. Late C17/early C18 origins (1716 date plaque removed) remodelled and considerably enlarged in late C19. Unrendered stone rubble, roughly coursed to original range, with ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with gable ends. Tall ridge and gable end stacks with ashlar quoins, moulded caps and offsets. Plan: Lower end and 2-storey porch survive of the C17 range at left end. In late C19 the higher end of the house to the right of the porch was completely rebuilt as a 2-bay gable-ended range with a large, asymmetrical gabled wing set at obtuse angle incorporating imposing entrance porch was added to front upper end, creating an overall L-shaped plan. At same time, a parallel service range with projecting porch was added to the rear of the main range. C19 additions in Tudor style. 2 storeys. C17/early C18 core has 2-window range to left of porch. 16-paned sashes, the left-hand window without horns, above similar sash to left of 4-light casement with Gothick pointed arched glazing pattern. The windows have slightly cambered arches and flush sash boxes. Hipped roof to 2-storey porch with 16-paned sash over semi-circular arched doorway with dressed stone voussoirs. Fenestration to C19 range principally stone cavetto mullions 2 panes per light, the ground floor windows transomed with relieving arches. Range to right of 2-storey .porch has 2-window range and canted bay to ground floor incorporating stone 4- centred arched doorway. Wing at upper end asymmetrical with 3 gables with apex finials stepping up in size from left to right. Single light window to left of 3- light windows on each floor. Gabled entrance bay breaks forward slightly; this has a straight-headed mullion window of two 4-centred arched lights with label hoodmould above large 4-centred arched doorway with ogee-hollow moulded surround and heraldic stone crest above. Original door of 2 studded leaves with cover strips. 2-storey canted bay window to right.
