Details
CHULMLEIGH NEW STREET (west side), SS 6814 - 6914 Chulmleigh 7/87 2 adjoining cottages approximately 5 metres north of Greenwood Cottage GV II 2 cottages. Late C17/early C18. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with plain ridge, gable end to left, hipped at right end. Brick stacks and axial brick stack. Plans: cottage with principal room to each side of through-passage, that to the left at higher end probably the parlour, with kitchen to right. Probably in the C19 the cottage was divided into 2 occupations, the winder staircase to the front right-hand corner of the left-hand room probably being in its original position, with a second staircase to the right-hand room in the rear left-hand corner, now removed and converted to small scullery. Outshut to rear of each room, that to left with corrugated iron roof, that to right of stone rubble with slate roof. Right-hand cottage is smaller, now single room plan with staircase running up rear wall in left- hand corner, but originally partitioned to form a small pantry at the upper end. C19 lean-to kitchen outshut to rear. Exteriors: 2 storeys. 6 window range in all. Left-hand cottage has a large C20 3- light casement above a 2 light window 2 panes per light. Small early C19 2 light casement with 6 square leaded panes per light lighting staircase above and slightly to left of plank door with corrugated iron lean-to canopy. Right-hand cottage has C19 fenestration intact with 2 3 light casements, 3 panes per light on each floor and central doorway with panelled door and bracketted timber canopy. Interiors: left-hand cottage has rough cross ceiling beams to each of the principal rooms. Thin partitions to each side of the through-passage C19 winder staircase to left-hand room. Both end fireplaces concealed by C20 grates, otherwise the interior is largely unspoilt particularly the upper floor rooms which have limewashed plastered walls. Right-hand cottage interior largely altered in C20 but retains small section of probably C18 raised and fielded dado panelling beside the fireplace. Roof space accessible only over right-hand cottage, with very rough slender pegged principals, waney rafters and purlins: roof over left-hand cottage only partially accessible, with 3 similar boxed in trusses, and no evidence of smoke-blackening. The outbuilding adjoining to right end of the 2 cottages contains a gable end stone rubble and cob stack, and possibly formed a separate cottage, reduced to a storage room and roof reduced in height in late C19 or early C20.
