Details
CHULMLEIGH EAST STREET (north side) SS 6814 Chumleigh 7/49 The Red Lion GV II Inn. Late C18 or early C19. Joint-lined stuccoed stone rubble and some cob. Bitumenized slate roof with gable ends. Shafts of stacks demolished in C20. Plan: main range formerly of 3 rooms, the partition between 2 right-hand rooms removed in C20, with entrance hall and straight-run staircase between the 2 left-hand rooms. Kitchen wing to rear left-hand end and small 2 storey C19 hipped extension to rear of middle room. Attached to the right end is a long lofted range, formerly the stable block, converted to form part of the inn in C20. Exterior: 2 storeys. 4 window range. Left end attempts symmetry with tripartite sashes on each floor flanking 12 paned sash above C19 door surround with plain pilasters, moulded entablature and panelled reveals. 6 panelled door. Plank door to left of 12 paned sashes on each floor at right end. 2 loft doors to former stable range. Interior: entirely altered in C20. C19 King post roof structure.
