COLDRIDGE COLDRIDGE SS 60 NE 1/29 Church Cottage - GV II

Cottage. C17, modernised with service extension circa 1975. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. 2-room plan cottage facing south, the right (eastern) room is larger than the left. An axial stack between serves larger room only. Front lobby entrance between the rooms. Circa 1975 flat-roofed single storey service extension to rear of left room. Main block is 2 storeys. Irregular front of 3 ground floor and 2 first floor windows comprising a variety of late C19 and C20 casements, the latest without glazing bars. Central C20 stable- type door with sidelight and monopitch thatched hood. A third first floor window towards left end is thought to be blocked. If there were it would balance the front. Roof is hipped each end. Interior has plain carpentry detail. There are no main beams. The fireplace is stone rubble and cob and its oak lintel is soffit-chamfered with scroll stops. The oven was inserted or relined in the late C19. Roof is inaccessible but the base of a probably original A-frame truss shows over the larger room. A Church Cottage, but not surely identified as this one, is documented in 1679. Source: Devon SMR.
