Taw Bridge
GV
II
Road bridge over River Taw. Circa 1830. Coursed blocks of local iron stone with
rock-faced ashlar detail; replacement concrete copng. Vertical abutments to
single segmental arch in which some of the ashlar voussoirs are incised to appear
as 2 headers for regularity. Plain string course ramping slightly towards the
centre at road level. The parapet is ashlar on inside edges only. At each end the
walls curve outward to terminal piers which project only externally. The form of
the bridge is very similar to a number in the area. Lapford Bridge and Bury
Bridge, Morchard Bishop, include plaques commemorating their erection in 1830 by
Roger Tyler, builder, for the Trustees of the Exeter Turnpike.
