Details
CULMSTOCK WOODGATE ST 11 NW 6/68 - Woodgate Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Early or mid C19, probably C16 or C17 origins. Plastered stone rubble, maybe with cob; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof, formerly thatch. Plan: L-plan house. Since no internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to describe the plan in detail nor make an assessment of the historical development of the house. However the main block faces south-east and it has a 2 or 3-room plan. The outer rooms are the main rooms and they have gable-end stacks. There is an entrance hall containing the main stair left of centre. A corridor runs along the back of the main block. A kitchen block projects at right angles to rear of the right (north-east) end and it has a stack backing onto the main block. The lack of symmetry of the main block suggests the early or mid C19 house was a rebuild or modernisation of a C16 or C17 house. It is now 2 storeys. Exterior: irregular 4-window front of C19 16-pane sashes. The front doorway is left of centre and now contains a C20 door but behind a C19 gabled timber porch with square-section posts and dentil cornice. The plastered front has stucco quoin strips each end. Plain eaves and the gabled ends of the roof have stone coping. The rear block contains some C19 casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey. It is thought to contain an early or mid C19 joinery detail and may contain C16 or C17 carpentry detail.
