Details
BURLESCOMBE ST 01 NE 5/4 Eastbrook Farmhouse - - II Farmhouse. Probably mid C17. Plastered stone rubble, maybe with cob; stone rubble stack and chimneyshaft, now extended with C20 brick; concrete tile roof, formerly thatch. Plan: 3-room plan house facing south-east. The small left end room is unheated and may have been a dairy originally but has since been converted to an entrance hall with the main staircase. An axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces is set between the two main rooms. The centre room was probably the original kitchen and the right end room was the parlour. There is a lobby entrance in front of the stack. Outshots to rear of the former kitchen and dairy may be integral. Main house is 2 storeys and 2-storey C20 extension to rear of right room. Exterior: irregular 5-window front of early C20 casements with glazing bars. The main front doorway is right of centre and now contains a C20 door behind a contemporary gabled porch. Secondary doorway at left end also contains a C20 door behind a contemporary porch. The plaster on the front is incised as ashlar. Roof is gable-ended. To rear the roof is carried down over the early outshots and there is here a Cl7 oak 4-light window with chamfered mullions. Interior: only a limited internal inspection was available at the time of this survey. The centre room has a soffit-chamfered crossbeam with pyramid stops and the right room crossbeam has rough soffit-chamfers. Both fireplaces are blocked by C20 grates. The roof was not available for inspection. Although the house was modernised in the early C20 the work appears to have been superficial.
