Details
UPLOWMAN ST 01 NW 4/161 Cott Farmhouse - - II
2 cottages, formerly a single farmhouse. Mid - late C17, sub-divided in the late C19 - early C20. Plastered stone rubble, probably with some cob; stone rubble stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: the building overall faces south and has a 4-room plan. Originally it was a single farmhouse with central lobby plan. The outer rooms are smaller unheated rooms. The larger inner rooms are heated by a central axial stack serving back-to- back fireplaces. Since no internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to elucidate the original layout. Now the house has been divided into 2 cottages, each a 2-room plan either side of the central stack . The right (eastern) cottages uses the original lobby entrance onto the front of the central stack. The left-hand (western) cottage has a doorway inserted into the outer unheated room. Both cottages (and the original farmhouse) is 2 storeys. Exterior: overall regular but no longer symmetrical 4-window front, mostly C20 casements with glazing bars although the 2 first floor windows towards the right are probably original; they are oak-framed with flat-faded mullions and contain rectangular panes of old leaded glass. The original central lobby entrance has a C20 porch and front doorway. At the left (west) end the cottage has an inserted doorway a C20 plank door. The roof is half-hipped each end. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although it is reported that the original carpentry detail is well-preserved.
