Details
UPLOWMAN ST 01 NW 4/178 - Uplowman House - II Small country mansion. Late C18. Plastered stone rubble; stone rubble stacks with brick chimney shafts; slate roof. Plan: U-plan building. The main block faces south and it has a 2-room plan, one each side of a central entrance hall with the stair block projecting to rear in the angle of the 2 main wings. Both rooms have rear lateral stacks, the left (west) one shared with the adjoining room of the main rear 2-room plan rear block. Rear room has an end stack. Lower service rear block projecting to rear of the right room and it has a gable-end stack. Main house is 3 storeys and there is a basement below the main (west) rear block. Exterior: main block has a symmetrical 5-window front in which the centre bay is broken forward very slightly. All are 12-pane sashes (and there are more on the west side). Central main doorway contains a part-glazed panelled door and a fanlight with glazing bars. The doorcase has fluted pilasters and pedimented head. Plain stucco bands across the front at first and second floor levels and stucco quoins on each end corner. The roof is hipped each end. Interior: not inspected but apparently contains a great deal of original joinery and other detail including an open string geometric stair with stick balusters.
