Details

BUTTERLEIGH BUTTERLEIGH SS 90 NE 4/52 Parish Church of St Matthew - - II * Parish Church. Medieval tower (possibly 1319 when Bishop Stapledon dedicated a rebuilt church here); C14 south doorway; north wall and chancel, and probably much of the remainder rebuilt 1861, architect not known. The arcade looks early-C19. Coursed rubble; slate roof. West tower, nave, north aisle, south porch, chancel. Tower of 2 stages with battlemented parapet, rectangular stair turret to south with lean-to concreted roof; big breschia block quoins; square-headed 2-light belfry openings with chamfered mullions and jambs; trefoil-headed lancet, east, just above nave roof ridge; 3-light Perpendicular west window; a variant of wavy moulding to west doorway. North aisle west wall flush with west face of tower. North aisle east and west, and chancel east window, all of 3 lights with hood moulds and terminals; three 2-light windows to north aisle, north wall, one to north and south of chancel, and another to nave south wall, all flush; trefoils or simple roundels in top lights, C19 throughout. Heavy gable coping and crosses; one diagonal buttress to angle between nave and chancel to south. Interior: medieval tower arch of 2 orders, C13 trefoil-headed piscina in sanctuary south wall; C19 3-bay arcade with slender piers of square profile, chamfered, with moulded capitals and segmentally-headed arches with single moulding and flat soffit. Chancel arch, C19, of 2 orders with large heads for corbels. Ceiled, panelled roofs. Font: C12 or early C13, plain circular bowl, chamfered rim, a circular stem with moulded base. C17 pillar alms box, painted. Glass: North aisle Noon memorial window, 1926, Morris & Co.
