- Lower Hill Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Mid-late C17 with C19 and C20 alterations. Mixed slatestone rubble,
partly rendered, grouted rag slate roof, with axial ridge and gable end stacks,
asbestos slate roof to former barn attached to left, quartz stone at foot of walls.
3 room and through passage plan, passage closed by insertion of stair, with axial
hall stack backing on to passage, gable end stack heating inner room, possibly
originally unheated lower end, with stack inserted in lower end in C19. Hall has an
integral 2-storey gabled projecting bay to front and stair tower to rear. Passage
appears to have been widened, with small single storey C20 extension to rear.
Probably early C19 barn extension at lower end.
2 storeys and 4 windows, all C20 casements; upper end to right of passage has 3 bays,
centre bay broken forward, gabled, with ground floor plate glass window and first
floor 3-light 6-pane casement, both with slate dripmould; end bay to right has ground
floor plate glass window with granite lintel and first floor 2-light 6-pane casement;
bay to left has ground floor 2-light 6-pane casement with granite lintel and
ventilation breather above formed from one block of stone, blocked. To left, C20
gabled porch on concrete piers, half-glazed door in plain frame to passage, 2-light
casement above, 6 panes to left and 2 to right, to left a C20 French window and 2-
light 6-pane casement under eaves. Single storey barn attached to left, now used as
living accommodation, wall broken forward slightly, plain door. Right return has
glazed C20 door to right; left return has rendered gable end, 2-light 6-pane casement
with timber lintel, roof hipped. Rear has small single light at ground floor left,
stair tower of same build as house, main roof extended over, with C20 single light,
centre has single storey C20 bathroom addition possibly concealing site of original
rear passage door, barn has ragged joint to house and chamfered granite lintel reset
over 2-light 6-pane casement, C20 stack on rear slope of roof.
Interior wide central passage has rebuilt winder stair to rear, rear of oven
extending into passage to right, step down to left and up to right; hall to right of
passage has fireplace with flat granite lintel raised in C20 with cloam oven, recess
upper right, possibly smoking chamber; plank and battened door with strap hinges to
end room to right, stone floor partially remaining. Lower room to left of passage
has C19 fireplace with cambered hood, smoking chamber to left. Battered walls at
first floor, roof mainly rebuilt, one row of purlins along rear slope, one truss has
principal rafters, collar and queen posts.
