9/216 Retaining wall to the raised garden - to the south west of Endsleigh House
GV I
Retaining wall to the raised garden between the principal block of Endsleigh House (qv) and the childrens' cottage. Circa 1810 and possibly designed by Humphry Repton for the 6th Duke of Bedford. Stone rubble with oversailing capping containing a channel for a small artificial stream. The wall is curved and forms part of the crescent-shaped plan of the picturesque Cottage Ornee designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. On the south side the wall has an arched recess containing a grotesque head. The raised garden was formerly planted with which may have derived from Repton's study of Oriental gardens in connection with his designs for the Royal Pavilion (Hussey). The parterre and central fountain was a very early revival of a formal garden and is illustrated in the Red Book (1814). Christopher Hussey, Country Life, CXXX, 246; CXXX, 296.
