Details

EXBOURNE SS 60 SW 5/39 Shilstone Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. C17, possibly with earlier origins, late C20 extension. Plastered cob walls. Gable ended thatched roof. 2 brick stacks, 1 axial and 1 at left-hand gable end, 1 projecting rendered rubble stack at gable end of wing. Plan: L-shaped plan - may have started as 3-rooms-and-through-passage, lower end to the left, with hall stack backing on to the passage. Probably in circa late C17 the higher end was remodelled as a 1-room plan wing projecting to the front and heated by ane end stack. In the early C19 the house was modernised and in the C20 an extension was added at the rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front with equal-sized wing to the right. 3 and 4-light C19 casements on first floor with early C19 16-pane hornless sash on ground floor to the left. To its right is contemporary 6-panel door with doorhood above supported on wooden brackets. Wing has similar 16-pane sash on first floor and C20 3-light casement below. Thatch rises in eyebrow over first floor window. At the gable end of the wing is a blocked window opening on each floor. At rear of house is C20 1-storey addition. Interior : Inaccessible at time of survey but likely to contain original features such as beams, open fireplaces and possibly an early roof structure although these may have been concealed by C19 modernisation and there may also be good quality early C19 joinery.
