Details
NORTHLEW SS 50 SW 6/216 Furzehill Farmhouse - - II House, formerly farmhouse. Circa mid C17 with C18 or C19 and C20 additions. Plastered cob and rubble walls. Hipped thatch roof to left-hand part, gabled corrugated iron roof to right-hand end. Brick stack at right gable end and axial rubble stack with dripcourse and brick shaft. Plan: originally 2 heated room plan, larger room to right was hall with slightly projecting window bay at its left end, probably integral outshut behind left-hand room. Former outbuilding, recently converted, at left-hand end is probably an C18 or C19 addition. C19 outshut added behind right-hand room and C20 one behind converted left-hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front of late C20 2-light casements to left-hand thatched part, its 1st floor windows are dormers. Thatched C20 porch at centre with part-glazed door behind and C20 metal frame 2-light casement to its right. Single light C20 casements above. To their right is projecting hall bay which has 3-light C17 chamfered wooden mullion window on 1st floor with leaded panes. C19 3-light casement below. To the right at an intermediate level is a very small Cl? light in front of the stack which was presumably for a newel stairs. Rear elevation has small 2-light C17 wooden mullion window on 1st floor at centre. 3 outshuts along rear wall, the central one is the earlier one. Interior: the right-hand room has an original fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and hollow step-stopped chamfered wooden lintel. Chamfered ceiling beam with chamfered and hollow step-stopped joists. The window bay has a possibly original wooden seat set into it which continues around the partition to the adjoining room. Room to the left has fireplace with plain wooden lintel. In its rear wall is an ovolo-moulded wooden doorframe to the outshut. Simple C18 pegged roof with collars set into the rough straight principals. Despite its modest size this house preserves some good quality features.
