ST GILES SS 52 SE IN THE WOOD 4/199 Cellar approximately 1.5 metres - north-west of Way Barton
GV II
Cellar. Early C18. Local stone rubble with sections of plastered cob; partly slate, partly corrugated iron roof, formerly thatch. Plan: 3-room plan outbuilding facing south-east towards close by Way Barton (q.v.). The left end cell is open to the roof. The other 2 are floored over. The ceilings and walls were plastered which suggests it was built as a service block for the main farmhouse. Later it was probably used as a cider house and cellar and it appears there was once an external flight of stone steps to the loft. Secondary outshot on right (north-east) end includes a privy facing rear. Exterior: Ground floor has 3 doorways and first floor has a loft loading hatch over a patch of blocking from the removal of the external staircase. These all have plain C19 plank doors. The only feature earlier is a central first floor window; an unglazed slit window with oak frame. Roof is hipped. Interior: The centre and right rooms have neatly-chamfered beams. These with the evidence of ceiling plaster suggest that these rooms were of more than agricultural or service use originally. Original roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. The secondary privy has a C19 two-seater oak seat.
